SUMMARY:2024 WAA Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Click here for sign-up genius \n\n\n\nWe are hosting the 2024 Day of Service at Forest Home Cemetery & Arboretum. The site address is 2405 W. Forest Home Ave.\, Milwaukee\, WI 53215. The event is scheduled for Friday\, September 27th with an inclement weather day planned for an October 3rd.  \n\n\n\nForest Home Cemetery & Arboretum is an arboretum\, national historic site and independent\, community focused non-profit\, that provides access to a green space larger than any Milwaukee City park for the surrounding new immigrant\, south side neighborhood. Our grounds are open to the public everyday for jogging\, dog walking and bicycling. Tree pruning & removals will make the grounds safer for visitors and trees healthier. \n\n\n\nThere is a wide variety of work opportunities available including climbing and aerial lift applications (bucket and crawler lift access). There is a lot of pruning and removal work in the southern portion of the cemetery. \n\n\n\nOur work day will start at 8am. All volunteers bringing heavy equipment such as bucket trucks\, chip trucks\, and lifts\, please bring proper cones and signage to set up a safe work area.Lunch\, refreshments and warming areas will be provided by Forest Home Cemetery & Arboretum. Local media may be on site to help promote the efforts of our volunteers. Students from a number urban forestry programs will be in attendance\, this will be a great opportunity to mentor\, teach and advertise to the new generation of arborists. The Cemetery has partnerships with Teens Grow Greens and Sixteenth Street’s environmental apprentices. They are going to try and incorporate an opportunity for youth to learn from this experience. Please contact Adam Alves at alves.adam@countyofdane.com with any questions or to volunteer.  If you plan on attending\, please let him know how many people are attending and what kind of equipment you can volunteer for the day by September 15th so we can plan accordingly.

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the second year of our Youth T-shirt contest!  We hope all our members will encourage a child between the ages of 8 and 14 years old to submit a drawing.   \n\n\n\nOur 2024 theme will be “Trees of the Future”.  \n\n\n\nHere are the rules: \n\n\n\n\n A child (or children) must simply be sponsored by a WAA member (there is no cost\, but you must be a current member).  The WAA member is responsible for submitting a scan of the drawing (Please keep the original!) to the Editorial Chair at briana@treehealthmgmt.com.\n\n\n\nAn E-Blast will be sent during the third week of July when the contest will be live and announced on our website.\n\n\n\nThe drawing must be in black and white and must be submitted by August 8th\, 2024 by 5:00pm.\n\n\n\nOnly one drawing per child will be accepted.\n\n\n\nA panel of judges will meet on August 14th to select three finalists. The winning design will be voted on by current WAA members. All children’s names will be kept anonymous until a winner has been selected.\n\n\n\nThe winner will need to submit the original drawing via US Post or submit a high-quality digital scan (instructions will be provided).  The drawing will be the new apparel design for WAA clothing in 2025.  Apparel will be available for purchase to membership\, and our winner will receive a choice of a free WAA T-shirt or sweatshirt.\n\n\n\nAll participants will have their drawing showcased in a digital format on the WAA website.\n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Tina at admin@waa-isa.org.\n\n\n\n\nTips and Tricks: \n\n\n\n\nA simple line drawing (vs any type of shading) makes for the best screen print on apparel.\n\n\n\nThicker\, solid lines also work best for printing.\n\n\n\nOur printer will work with the winning artist to refine areas for printing.\n\n\n\nPlease do include the theme “Trees of the Future 2024” in the drawing.\n\n\n\nPlease do not sign the drawing.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Competing Legal Interests in Street Trees (prerecorded)
DESCRIPTION:Street trees are ubiquitous in urban areas. Municipalities often – but not always – assume control over the trees growing along public rights-of-way. But what degree of ownership and control do property owners and municipalities each have over the trees? This talk presents a sampling of several cases that illustrate some of the conflicts that arise between landowners\, municipalities\, and third parties with respect to three key property rights: the right to use\, the right to sell\, and the right to destroy.Join us for the informative webinar! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker James Komen is a consulting arborist in California specializing in risk assessment and tree appraisal. SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Tree Appraisal and the Principle of Substitution
DESCRIPTION:One of the foundational concepts in tree appraisal is the Principal of Substitution. A thing cannot appraise for more than a substitute of equivalent utility. Possibly the hardest step in applying this principal is selecting a “functional equivalent” to the subject tree or trees. When selecting the best appraisal technique\, an appraiser must ask: “Is there a way the benefits provided by this tree could be replaced at a lower cost?” Depending on the facts of a case\, the answer could be very different. This presentation reviews 10 court cases that applied the Principle of Substitution to tree appraisal.Join us for the informative webinar! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker James Komen is a consulting arborist in California specializing in risk assessment and tree appraisal.
