SUMMARY:i-Tree Open Academy - Spring 2024
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \n\n\n\nWhat: \n\n\n\nThe i-Tree Open Academy virtual learning series is back for spring of 2024\, with everything you need to explore the latest from the i-Tree suite of tools. Whether your work with trees involves planting\, managing\, funding\, educating\, or beyond – i-Tree can help you better understand the benefits that trees provide\, the impacts of where those benefits are\, and how to apply that science to your project goals. \n\n\n\nWho: \n\n\n\nThis seminar-style offering will serve as both a refresher and an introduction to the newest tools and features\, with one-hour virtual sessions over a six-week period. There is no fee for the Academy\, and you can join all live sessions\, or select those that meet your schedule and interests. Register by filling out the participant form. \n\n\n\nWe will be offering continuing education credits (CEUs) for both the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and the New Jersey state Urban and Community Forestry program. One CEU is available for each of the live sessions attended. \n\n\n\nHow: \n\n\n\nAll sessions will be streamed live via this Microsoft Teams link. They will also be recorded and posted below as well as on the i-Tree YouTube channel\, so that you can catch up on anything you missed. There are no requirements for this course\, and there will be self-directed exercises that you can use to gain experience using the tools. You are encouraged to submit any questions related to the course via info@itreetools.org\, and there will be opportunities to ask questions during certain live sessions and office hours. \n\n\n\nWhen: \n\n\n\nEach session is one hour long and offered Wednesdays at 1:00 pm (Eastern US time). Note: Office hours days and times may vary. \n\n\n\n·       March 20th – Introduction to i-Tree. Understand the basic science of i-Tree and the USFS research behind it. Explore the relationships between the i-Tree tools and the data they provide. Start to consider which i-Tree tools will be best for the application you have in mind. \n\n\n\n·       March 27th – Online with MyTree\, i-Tree Design\, and i-Tree Planting. Explore the easiest to use online i-Tree tools for individual trees. Get a better sense of their advantages and most common uses. \n\n\n\n·       April 3rd – The view from the top: i-Tree Canopy and OurTrees. You can’t manage your forest resource unless you know what you have. Get an estimate of tree canopy cover for any area or monitor change with a few hours of image analysis. Or save your mouse clicks and see if a quick visit to OurTrees will get you what you need. \n\n\n\n·       April 17th – i-Tree Landscape: Data\, maps\, and equity portal. With dozens of layers covering a wide range of geographies it is easy to get lost in Landscape. This session will keep you on track to finish with a map of tree benefits and priority areas within your community. \n\n\n\n·       April 24th– i-Tree Eco the flagship tool. i-Tree Eco is where the latest science goes first. It is a large\, flexible tool that offers much more than we can cover in a single hour. We’ll help you decide if Eco is right for you and let you know where to go to learn more. \n\n\n\n·       May 1st – Putting i-Tree to Work. Take a whirlwind tour through the many ways that i-Tree can be used to further your tree initiatives\, from communication to site selection to accountability metrics. Get inspired and make a plan to put i-Tree to work for you.

SUMMARY:Mitigating Urban Heat Threats through a Community-Driven Framework
DESCRIPTION:Extreme urban heat disproportionately affects poorer and communities of color in Richmond\, VA\, which is tied to long-standing histories of marginalization (such as the practice of redlining). This places these communities at a heightened state of precariousness in the face of worsening climate extremes\, such as more frequent heat waves. Consequently\, cities must manage and mitigate urban heat threats. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Jeremy Hoffman and Sheri Shannon will describe an innovative\, community-driven\, and collaborative network of nonprofits and scientists that seeks to increase tree canopy in neighborhoods shown to be hotter through a novel urban heat island assessment methodology. They will reflect on funding mechanisms\, cooperation between organizations with differential power\, and challenges posed by working with disconnected city programs.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Engaging Community Residents in Heat Mitigation and Canopy Expansion
DESCRIPTION:The West Mesa River Community Heat Action Project\, a recent initiative of the Rio Reimagined partnership\, focuses on addressing heat mitigation along the eastern reach of the Salt-Gila River corridor through Metropolitan Phoenix. The two-year project (2020-2022) engaged over 350 residents\, 8 faith-based organizations\, 15 social service organizations\, and 34 local businesses\, with more than 300 trees planted to date.  \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Paul Coseo and Cecilia Riviere will share strategies and lessons learned from the multi-faceted project\, which included social vulnerability mapping\, tree inventory\, community engagement\, education\, and implementation of urban canopy to cool local river neighborhoods.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers: Paul Coseo\, Cecilia Kelly Riviere

SUMMARY:Greenspace Preservation in Distressed Communities
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Cassandra Johnson\, Research Social Scientist with the USDA Forest Service\, will present research findings on the tension between distressed social conditions and environmental preservation in Atlanta’s South River watershed. Allen Doyle with the South River Forest Coalition will outline recent efforts the coalition has made to establish the “South River Forest\,’ which could include 3\,500 acres of both green and developed spaces.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: The Influence of Municipal Pruning Practices on Urban Forest Health and Storm Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Municipalities across the U.S. are increasingly challenged to fund and perform systematic tree pruning activities that enhance urban tree health and longevity\, maximize ecosystem service benefits\, improve climate and storm resilience\, and minimize public risk. Only (46%) of 667 U.S. communities surveyed in 2014 reported completing tree pruning on a systematic basis. Dr. Richard Hauer will share the benefits of systematic pruning and the status of pruning in U.S. cities. Dr. Leslie Brandt will spotlight tree maintenance practices\, innovations and challenges from 10 case studies in the U.S. Through analysis of decades of systematic pruning data in Milwaukee\, Randy Krouse will demonstrate the importance of pruning cycle/forest structure alignment on forest health and resilience\, tree maintenance capacity\, storm resilience and public safety. Finally\, Paul Johnson will wrap up the discussion by highlighting current and emergent resource aids for improved urban forest management. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is open to all. We are seeking 1 CEU with the International Society of Arboriculture.

SUMMARY:Free Urban Forest Connections Webinar: The Science and Practice of Managing Forests in Cities
DESCRIPTION:The past few months have highlighted the importance of parks and nature in cities. Urban natural areas are critical as refugia\, protecting biodiversity and mitigating the impacts of climate change all while contributing to the health and wellbeing of nearby residents. However\, natural areas are threatened by development as city populations grow\, and are susceptible to invasive plants and fragmentation all of which can lead to a decline in forest health and the benefits they can provide. In this webinar\, Sarah Charlop-Powers and Dr. Clara Pregitzer of the Natural Areas Conservancy will introduce the challenges and opportunities of managing forests in cities\, including 25 case studies from 12 cities across the U.S.\, and Forest Service research ecologist Dr. Rich Hallett will present a silvicultural framework for assessment and management of forests in cities\, adapted from rural forest management practice. Together\, the team will introduce viewers to a new collaborative network of cities and share successful strategies from across the nation. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.
