SUMMARY:TREE Fund Webinar: Examining the Connection Between Woody Plant Biodiversity and Arthropod Pest Management Interventions in Residential Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:The woody plant communities found on residential properties constitute an integral component of cities’ green infrastructure and serve as a nexus between urban residents and the natural world. Despite this importance\, residential landscapes are infrequently designed with principles of sustainability in mind\, resulting in the extensive use of pesticides to suppress a diverse array of plant pests. In this presentation\, we will discuss recently published research that asks whether ecological theory can inform the sustainable design and management of woody plant communities on urban residential properties. \n\n\n\nSpeaker – Dr. Chris Riley\, PhD \n\n\n\nISA CEU credit – 1.0

SUMMARY:Webinar: Planning for the Next Three Letter Urban Tree Canopy Changer: Lessons Learned with DED\, EAB\, ETC.
DESCRIPTION:All aboard a TREE Fund train trip ride back to what we have learned this past century with some important urban tree canopy game changers. Our first stop is a lesson in biology and an interdisciplinary economic journey using lessons learned from DED and EAB. See how science has led to reliable predictors with a planned stop at preventing tree loss and the currency of canopy. The future journey continues to see how the TREE Fund supports tree changing research and practical results you can use and avoid getting derailed by ETC. \n\n\n\nISA and SAF CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS (available with the live broadcast) ISA CEU Category: BCMA Science: 1\, Practice: 0\, Management: 0\, Climber Specialist: 1\, Certified Arborist: 1\, Municipal Specialist: 1\, Aerial Lift: 1. SAF CFE Category: Cat 1: 1\, Cat 2: 0

SUMMARY:TREE Fund Webinar: Loading of a Tie-in Point While Climbing
DESCRIPTION:Loading of a Tie-in Point While Climbing \n\n\n\nTuesday\, February 9\, 2021\, at 12 p.m. Central \n\n\n\nBrian Kane\, PhD\, University of Massachusetts Amherst \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE To Register\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nChoosing an appropriate tie-in point (TIP) is a key to efficiently and safely work in a tree. A TIP that’s high and central in the crown provides maximum mobility for a climber\, but the TIP also has to be strong enough to bear the loads associated with climbing. Until recently\, very few measurements of such loads were taken. Starting with the ITCC in 2017\, Dr. Kane has measured loads at the TIP for a variety of situations including ascents\, descents\, limb walks and swings\, and falls. This presentation will present the findings from those studies. \n\n\n\nISA and SAF continuing education credits are available for watching the entire live webinar. CEU details: \n\n\n\nSAF CEU Cat 2: 1.00 \n\n\n\nISA CEU Category: Practice: 1\, Climber Specialist: 1\, Certified Arborist: 1\, Municipal Specialist: 1\, Aerial Lift: 1 \n\n\n\nThis webinar is co-sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: Protecting Trees from Construction Impacts
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Benson\, PhD Update: Andrew Koeser\, PhD is the new speaker. \n\n\n\nWith increased intensification in cities throughout the world\, urban trees are often at risk of becoming damaged by construction impacts\, such as utility trenching or pavement / sidewalk repair. If the damage is severe and a tree loses a lot of its roots\, the consequences may result in tree failure\, or tree removal due to subsequent poor health. In this presentation\, we will look at some of the reasons why urban trees become damaged during construction and some of the more suitable methods available to prevent or limit that damage occurring. We’ll also look at some recent research which aims to improve what we know about the consequences of construction damage effects\, and hopefully provide some useful tools to practitioners who work with roots on a regular basis. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: Why Do Tree Branches Fail?
DESCRIPTION:We will explore how researchers from ecology\, forestry and arboriculture have utilized biomechanics to understand how trees contend with the forces mother nature can throw at them during their long-life span. Biomechanics approaches integrate biology and engineering principles to explore how organisms deal with their environment. We will explore two studies that examine how loads move through a branch union/fork. A close relationship was found between aspect ratio and different failure types\, and we will discuss how this information can help define the point at which a weaker co-dominant fork occurs.1 CEU available with the live broadcast.\n\n\n\nGreg Dahle is an associate professor at West Virginia University where he teaches courses in arboriculture and urban forestry. Greg’s research lab utilizes a biomechanical approach to understand how trees grow and survive environmental loads\, as well as broader urban forest management issues. Greg has worked as a commercial and utility arborist and is an ISA Board-Certified Master Arborist.\n\n\n\nCheck out the other webinars we have planned for you in 2020 or watch any of our previous webinars on our website at treefund.org/webinars.
