SUMMARY:ISA 2024 Annual International Conference
DESCRIPTION:The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) will celebrate 100 years of professionalism this year. Looking back over the years\, seeing how the organization grew is exciting. In 1924\, the first Shade Tree Conference was held in Stamford\, Connecticut\, and opened with about 36 participants from several different states. Today\, our most recent Annual International Conference had approximately 905 attendees from 23 other countries. In 1974\, the first official Tree Trimmer’s Jamboree was held and featured a 40-ft. foot lock and a work climb consisting of three workstations. Now\, the International Tree Climbing Championship features five different events and the best climbers around the globe. In 1992\, the ISA Certified Arborist® program launched\, which not only brought greater recognition for the profession but led to the creation of several other more specialized credentials and qualifications as well. \n\n\n\nISA has grown tremendously over the past 100 years\, and our impact on the profession and the community continues to grow in ways that the first Shade Tree Convention participants may not have imagined. We want to thank our members and credential holders who’ve taken this incredible journey with us as we celebrate our accomplishments. Your support has brought us to this milestone. \n\n\n\nIn August 2023\, ISA began its Road to Centennial Celebration\, a year-long series of events and initiatives. This includes\, among other things\, articles in Arborist News highlighting the organization’s history\, special webinars with industry leaders\, and a commemorative book. We encourage everyone to join us as we celebrate 100 years of professionalism and promote the professional practice of arboriculture. The road to Centennial culminates at the 2024 Annual International Conference\, 12 – 14 August\, in Atlanta\, Georgia\, where we will have a grand celebration and honor the contributions of our members and credential holders. We hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:WAA 2nd Annual Youth T-Shirt Design Contest
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the second year of our Youth T-shirt contest!  We hope all our members will encourage a child between the ages of 8 and 14 years old to submit a drawing.   \n\n\n\nOur 2024 theme will be “Trees of the Future”.  \n\n\n\nHere are the rules: \n\n\n\n\n A child (or children) must simply be sponsored by a WAA member (there is no cost\, but you must be a current member).  The WAA member is responsible for submitting a scan of the drawing (Please keep the original!) to the Editorial Chair at briana@treehealthmgmt.com.\n\n\n\nAn E-Blast will be sent during the third week of July when the contest will be live and announced on our website.\n\n\n\nThe drawing must be in black and white and must be submitted by August 8th\, 2024 by 5:00pm.\n\n\n\nOnly one drawing per child will be accepted.\n\n\n\nA panel of judges will meet on August 14th to select three finalists. The winning design will be voted on by current WAA members. All children’s names will be kept anonymous until a winner has been selected.\n\n\n\nThe winner will need to submit the original drawing via US Post or submit a high-quality digital scan (instructions will be provided).  The drawing will be the new apparel design for WAA clothing in 2025.  Apparel will be available for purchase to membership\, and our winner will receive a choice of a free WAA T-shirt or sweatshirt.\n\n\n\nAll participants will have their drawing showcased in a digital format on the WAA website.\n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Tina at admin@waa-isa.org.\n\n\n\n\nTips and Tricks: \n\n\n\n\nA simple line drawing (vs any type of shading) makes for the best screen print on apparel.\n\n\n\nThicker\, solid lines also work best for printing.\n\n\n\nOur printer will work with the winning artist to refine areas for printing.\n\n\n\nPlease do include the theme “Trees of the Future 2024” in the drawing.\n\n\n\nPlease do not sign the drawing.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Competing Legal Interests in Street Trees (prerecorded)
DESCRIPTION:Street trees are ubiquitous in urban areas. Municipalities often – but not always – assume control over the trees growing along public rights-of-way. But what degree of ownership and control do property owners and municipalities each have over the trees? This talk presents a sampling of several cases that illustrate some of the conflicts that arise between landowners\, municipalities\, and third parties with respect to three key property rights: the right to use\, the right to sell\, and the right to destroy.Join us for the informative webinar! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker James Komen is a consulting arborist in California specializing in risk assessment and tree appraisal. He helps clients make informed management decisions for individual trees and for tree inventories. \n\n\n\nHis work has been published in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry\, Arboricultural Consultant\, Palms\, Ontario Arborist\, and Western Arborist. He is an ISA TRAQ instructor and has taught workshops on tree appraisal around the U.S. and Canada. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYour personal Zoom link to access the webinar will be emailed by Monday\, July 09\, 2024. You WILL NOT receive the link at the time of registration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegistration Deadline: Friday\, July 05\, 2024 at 5:00 pm \n\n\n\nPrice: $25 WAA Members/ $40 Non-Members \n\n\n\n1.0 ISA CEU available. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nQuestions: \n\n\n\n\nContact Tina Johnson at admin@waa-isa.org\n\n\n\n\nCancellation and Refund Policy:\n\n\n\n\nRefunds will be made if requested on or before July 5\, 2024 with a $5 processing fee. \n\n\n\nThere will be no refunds for cancellations made after July 5th\, although substitutions may be permitted.  Refunds will only be considered in emergency situations at the Wisconsin Arborist Association’s discretion.  Refunds will not be provided for registrants who do not attend the event.\n\n\n\nNotice of cancellation and/or substitutions must be made by contacting Tina Johnson through the Contact Us page on our website or by calling Tina Johnson at 262-899-0060.  A cancellation acknowledgement will be sent within 3 working days and fees refunded within 10 working days\, subject to this Return Policy.  We do not issue refunds once the event has occurred.\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Thanks! \n\n\n\nThank you to ISA Michigan for coordinating this event! SUMMARY:FREE Urban Forestry Webinar: Trees and Storm Loading Events in the Upper Midwest: Predicting Damage\, Preventing It When Possible\, & Recovering Damaged Trees & Landscapes - A Prelude to the WAA Summer Conference
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will be an amended version of the full presentation at the WAA Summer Workshop to be held at the University of Wisconsin River Falls campus on July 26. \n\n\n\nUrban tree damage due to weather events in the upper Midwest are usually the result of wind loading events\, as well as snow and ice loading. If damage from these events is inevitable\, why don’t all trees suffer the same fate? This session will rank the loading events from incidental to catastrophic and predict which trees are more likely to suffer the most\, what can be done to prevent the preventable damage to trees\, and what steps can be taken to recover damaged trees (when they are worth it) as well as planting more resilient landscapes as part of the prevention and recovery steps. Key words or phrases to consider include tree defects\, construction activities\, tree species profiling\, species selection\, and planting practices. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this FREE live webinar that is a prelude to the WAA Summer Conference which ties into Gary Johnson’s talk called “Storm Damage to Trees: Predicting\, Preventing\, Recovering.” \n\n\n\n0.5 CEUs available \n\n\n\nPre-registration is required. Click on ‘Register Online’ on the right side of the screen to register. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGary Johnson is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Forest Resources\, University of Minnesota (UMN) Twin Cities campus. He has been a researcher and teacher with the department as well as the UMN Extension for 32 years\, focusing his efforts on minimizing construction damage to trees\, predicting and preventing storm damage to trees\, tree production and planting practices\, and urban tree health. \n\n\n\nSpecial Thanks!\n\n\n\nThank you to UW-Extension for coordinating this event with us. We look forward to partnering on future events with you!

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Tree Appraisal and the Principle of Substitution
DESCRIPTION:One of the foundational concepts in tree appraisal is the Principal of Substitution. A thing cannot appraise for more than a substitute of equivalent utility. Possibly the hardest step in applying this principal is selecting a “functional equivalent” to the subject tree or trees. When selecting the best appraisal technique\, an appraiser must ask: “Is there a way the benefits provided by this tree could be replaced at a lower cost?” Depending on the facts of a case\, the answer could be very different. This presentation reviews 10 court cases that applied the Principle of Substitution to tree appraisal.Join us for the informative webinar! He is an ISA TRAQ instructor and has taught workshops on tree appraisal around the U.S. and Canada. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYour personal Zoom link to access the webinar will be emailed by Monday\, June 17\, 2024.
