SUMMARY:FREE Urban Forestry Webinar: Approaches to Dealing With Circling Roots on Container-Grown Trees - A Prelude to the WAA Fall Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Container-grown trees are increasingly popular in a range of urban forestry and landscape applications. However\, arborists and landscapers are often concerned about defects associated with container growing. Dr. Bert Cregg and members of his lab have researched various approaches to dealing with root systems of container-grown trees over the past decade. In this webinar\, Dr. Cregg will highlight key findings from his group’s research and discuss practical implications for tree planters. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this FREE live webinar that is a prelude to the WAA Fall Seminar which ties into Dr. Cregg’s talk called “Quit Going in Circles: Managing Roots of Container-Grown Trees.” \n\n\n\n0.5 CEUs available \n\n\n\nPre-registration is required. Click on ‘Register Online’ on the right side of the screen to register. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Bert Cregg is a Professor in the Departments of Horticulture and Forestry at Michigan State University. He conducts research and extension programming on the physiology and management of trees\, with a focus on nursery and Christmas tree production and urban forestry. Dr. Cregg has a Ph.D. in Forest Resources from the University of Georgia and was a research plant physiologist for the USDA Forest Service and International Paper before joining the faculty at MSU. \n\n\n\nSpecial Thanks!\n\n\n\nThank you to UW-Extension for coordinating this event with us. We look forward to partnering on future events with you!

Participants will also learn how to identify and assess defects and conditions that may affect likelihood of failure. Tree Inspection and Assessment: Participants will learn about types of targets\, assess the likelihood of a tree or tree part impacting a target\, and estimate the consequences of tree or tree part failure. Participants will also learn how to assess site factors that may influence likelihood of failure. \nData Analysis and Risk Categorization: After learning the tree and target factors that must be assessed\, participants will combine likelihood of failure\, likelihood of impact\, and consequences of failure to derive a risk rating. This rating helps the assessor communicate tree risk to clients and risk managers\, and allows comparison of risk levels between trees. \nRisk Reporting: Participants will learn skills for clearly communicating tree risk to clients\, both in written and verbal reports. Participants will also learn about the key components that should be included in a report after completing a tree risk assessment. \nTREE RISK ASSESSMENT QUALIFICATION INFORMATIONThe Tree Risk Assessment Qualification is valid for five years from the date the TRAQ exam is passed. SUMMARY:FREE Urban Forestry Webinar: Do You Know the Ascomycete Wood Decayers of Urban Trees? - A Prelude to the WAA/DNR Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Most arborists recognize that mushrooms\, brackets and conks of the basidiomycete fungi on urban trees indicate internal decay. However\, one of the most important wood decay fungi is also one of the most obscure. Kretzschmaria deusta is an ascomycete wood decay pathogen with a very wide host range and one that can break barrier and reaction zones and cause extensive decay in the lower trunk and buttress roots. This presentation will discuss ascomycete wood decay by focusing on Kretzschmaria deusta and other ascomycete wood decay fungi. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this FREE live webinar that is a prelude to the WAA/DNR Annual Conference which ties into Dr. Luley’s talk called “Biology\, Identification and Management of Wood Decay in Urban Trees.” \n\n\n\n0.5 CEUs available \n\n\n\nPre-registration is required. Click on ‘Register Online’ on the right side of the screen to register. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristopher J. Luley\, Ph.D. has BS and MS from SUNY ESF in Syracuse in Forest Pathology. His Ph.D. is from Iowa State University in plant pathology where he also managed the Plant Diagnostic Clinic. He was Forest Pathologist for the State of Missouri\, and has been a consultant since 1991. In 2017 he started Urban Forest Diagnostic. Dr. Luley has over 70 scientific\, technical and popular press articles and received the R. W. Harris Authors Award from the International Society of Arboriculture. He developed TreeRot.com and recently received the Brian Skinner Lifetime Achievement Award from the NYS Arborist\, ISA Chapter and author award from the Midwest Chapter of ISA.   \n\n\n\nSpecial Thanks!\n\n\n\nThank you to UW-Extension for coordinating this event with us. We look forward to partnering on future events with you!
