SUMMARY:Free Urban Forest Connections Webinar: Decision Tools for Local Governments: Responding to Ecosystems in Distress
DESCRIPTION:California and the Pacific Islands have long been on the frontier of extreme climate events and natural resource management in cities and communities. Urban forests have been a focus for federal research and state forestry assistance in California since the early 1980s\, leveraging public resources to support healthy trees and forest cover. In this webinar\, we will explore current research in the region and highlight a model\, long-term partnership with California Polytechic State University (Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo) Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute. With fresh funding from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, we will learn about new directions and how local governments are using the tools. And we will have dialogue with our community of practice to catalyze replication of the partnership in other states\, and application of the tools at a national scale. \n\n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\nNatalie van Doorn\, USDA Forest Service \n\n\n\nMatt Ritter\, Cal-Poly-San Luis Obispo \n\n\n\nIan Kesterson\, City of Berkeley\n\n\n\n\nCEU available to attendees.

SUMMARY:TREE Fund Webinars
DESCRIPTION:Predictors of street tree survival in Philadelphia: Tree traits\, biophysical environment\, and socioeconomic context \n\n\n\nTuesday\, October 8\, 2024\, Noon (CST) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Robert Fahey will be presenting his findings and research from his TREE Fund grant with the Hyland Johns Research Grant Program. CEUs will be available for this free webinar. \n\n\n\nWe focus on how street tree survival in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania (US) has been influenced by 1) tree traits and attributes\, 2) the local biophysical environment\, and 3) socioeconomic context. The work used a longitudinal monitoring approach with a 6-year time interval and 103 randomly-located\, fixed-length permanent plots\, containing a range of tree size classes\, to assess street tree survival rates\, predictors of survival\, and the balance of tree losses and gains. We present findings on tree mortality and its drivers and discuss the implications of the work for management and monitoring in urban street tree systems. \n\n\n\nRegistration is now open

Growing up on a farm in central Iowa\, Jay spent a majority of his time outdoors. In that time\, he found a passion for turf in the golf industry\, which eventually led to him working at SiteOne Landscape supply. Through his work experiences\, Jay was able to broaden his expertise to tree care\, irrigation\, and landscape lighting. As an Upper Midwest Regional Technical Manager\, Jay’s responsibility is to expand sales\, provide technical support and share plant health care solutions with customers. With over 25 years in the green industry\, Jay has held positions such as golf course superintendent\, green industry sales management\, and even owned a golf course. In 2008\, Jay purchased his hometown golf course and operated it for four years. After the floods of 2008\, he represented the National Golf Course Owners Association on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. to explain to lawmakers how golf’s exclusion from disaster-related tax relief was unfairly burdensome to golf course operators. Jay has also previously held the seat of President for the Iowa Golf Course Superintendents Association and is currently serving on the Iowa Turfgrass Institute board of directors representing the Iowa Professional Lawn Care Association. SUMMARY:ISA 2024 Annual International Conference
DESCRIPTION:The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) will celebrate 100 years of professionalism this year. Looking back over the years\, seeing how the organization grew is exciting. In 1924\, the first Shade Tree Conference was held in Stamford\, Connecticut\, and opened with about 36 participants from several different states. Today\, our most recent Annual International Conference had approximately 905 attendees from 23 other countries. In 1974\, the first official Tree Trimmer’s Jamboree was held and featured a 40-ft. foot lock and a work climb consisting of three workstations. Now\, the International Tree Climbing Championship features five different events and the best climbers around the globe. In 1992\, the ISA Certified Arborist® program launched\, which not only brought greater recognition for the profession but led to the creation of several other more specialized credentials and qualifications as well. \n\n\n\nISA has grown tremendously over the past 100 years\, and our impact on the profession and the community continues to grow in ways that the first Shade Tree Convention participants may not have imagined. We want to thank our members and credential holders who’ve taken this incredible journey with us as we celebrate our accomplishments. Your support has brought us to this milestone. \n\n\n\nIn August 2023\, ISA began its Road to Centennial Celebration\, a year-long series of events and initiatives. This includes\, among other things\, articles in Arborist News highlighting the organization’s history\, special webinars with industry leaders\, and a commemorative book. We encourage everyone to join us as we celebrate 100 years of professionalism and promote the professional practice of arboriculture. The road to Centennial culminates at the 2024 Annual International Conference\, 12 – 14 August\, in Atlanta\, Georgia\, where we will have a grand celebration and honor the contributions of our members and credential holders. We hope to see you there.

All children’s names will be kept anonymous until a winner has been selected.\n\n\n\nThe winner will need to submit the original drawing via US Post or submit a high-quality digital scan (instructions will be provided).  The drawing will be the new apparel design for WAA clothing in 2025.  Apparel will be available for purchase to membership\, and our winner will receive a choice of a free WAA T-shirt or sweatshirt.\n\n\n\nAll participants will have their drawing showcased in a digital format on the WAA website.\n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Tina at admin@waa-isa.org.\n\n\n\n\nTips and Tricks: \n\n\n\n\nA simple line drawing (vs any type of shading) makes for the best screen print on apparel.\n\n\n\nThicker\, solid lines also work best for printing.\n\n\n\nOur printer will work with the winning artist to refine areas for printing.\n\n\n\nPlease do include the theme “Trees of the Future 2024” in the drawing.\n\n\n\nPlease do not sign the drawing.
