SUMMARY:EAB University Webinar: Recognizing Invasive vs. Native Trees
DESCRIPTION:Identification features will be outlined to help you identify invasive trees that may be similar to some of our native forest trees here in the Midwest. Field identification is important to select species to control and species to retain in invasive plant management. Field ID characteristics will be provided to help you separate the native from the exotic invasive. \n\n\n\nLenny Farlee\, Purdue Extension Forester

This qualification promotes the safety of people and property by providing a standardized and systematic process for assessing tree risk. \nThe results of a tree risk assessment can provide tree owners and risk managers with the information to make informed decisions to enhance tree benefits\, health\, and longevity. The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification Course is a two-day educational course followed by a 1/2 day assessment that includes both a written and field component. The course prepares the participant to take the TRAQ assessment to become ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. It is required that you attend the course and successfully complete the assessment in order to receive the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification. 14.5 CEUs. \nHosted by: The Wisconsin Arborist Association \nInstructor: Mr. Steve LaneSteve Lane is the Lead Urban Forestry Consultant at Great Lakes Urban Forestry\, where he manages Urban Forests for over 100 public sector clients performing tree inventory\, tree risk assessments\, urban forestry management plans\, and expert witness work.  He is the Past President of the Illinois Arborist Association and on the ISA Board of Directors. \nCOURSE CONTENT \nTree Biology and Mechanics: Participants will learn how to assess wood structure\, decay\, and tree mechanics\, and evaluate their impact on likelihood of tree or tree part failure. Participants will also learn how to identify and assess defects and conditions that may affect likelihood of failure. Tree Inspection and Assessment: Participants will learn about types of targets\, assess the likelihood of a tree or tree part impacting a target\, and estimate the consequences of tree or tree part failure. Participants will also learn how to assess site factors that may influence likelihood of failure. \nData Analysis and Risk Categorization: After learning the tree and target factors that must be assessed\, participants will combine likelihood of failure\, likelihood of impact\, and consequences of failure to derive a risk rating. This rating helps the assessor communicate tree risk to clients and risk managers\, and allows comparison of risk levels between trees. \nRisk Reporting: Participants will learn skills for clearly communicating tree risk to clients\, both in written and verbal reports. Participants will also learn about the key components that should be included in a report after completing a tree risk assessment. \nTREE RISK ASSESSMENT QUALIFICATION INFORMATIONThe Tree Risk Assessment Qualification is valid for five years from the date the TRAQ exam is passed. SUMMARY:Free Urban Forest Connections Webinar: Decision Tools for Local Governments: Responding to Ecosystems in Distress
DESCRIPTION:California and the Pacific Islands have long been on the frontier of extreme climate events and natural resource management in cities and communities. Urban forests have been a focus for federal research and state forestry assistance in California since the early 1980s\, leveraging public resources to support healthy trees and forest cover. In this webinar\, we will explore current research in the region and highlight a model\, long-term partnership with California Polytechic State University (Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo) Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute. With fresh funding from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, we will learn about new directions and how local governments are using the tools. And we will have dialogue with our community of practice to catalyze replication of the partnership in other states\, and application of the tools at a national scale. \n\n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\nNatalie van Doorn\, USDA Forest Service \n\n\n\nMatt Ritter\, Cal-Poly-San Luis Obispo \n\n\n\nIan Kesterson\, City of Berkeley\n\n\n\n\nCEU available to attendees.

SUMMARY:TREE Fund Webinars
DESCRIPTION:Predictors of street tree survival in Philadelphia: Tree traits\, biophysical environment\, and socioeconomic context \n\n\n\nTuesday\, October 8\, 2024\, Noon (CST) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Robert Fahey will be presenting his findings and research from his TREE Fund grant with the Hyland Johns Research Grant Program. CEUs will be available for this free webinar. \n\n\n\nWe focus on how street tree survival in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania (US) has been influenced by 1) tree traits and attributes\, 2) the local biophysical environment\, and 3) socioeconomic context. The work used a longitudinal monitoring approach with a 6-year time interval and 103 randomly-located\, fixed-length permanent plots\, containing a range of tree size classes\, to assess street tree survival rates\, predictors of survival\, and the balance of tree losses and gains. We present findings on tree mortality and its drivers and discuss the implications of the work for management and monitoring in urban street tree systems. \n\n\n\nRegistration is now open

DESCRIPTION:VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Click here for sign-up genius \n\n\n\nWe are hosting the 2024 Day of Service at Forest Home Cemetery & Arboretum. The site address is 2405 W. Forest Home Ave.\, Milwaukee\, WI 53215. The event is scheduled for Friday\, September 27th with an inclement weather day planned for an October 3rd.  \n\n\n\nForest Home Cemetery & Arboretum is an arboretum\, national historic site and independent\, community focused non-profit\, that provides access to a green space larger than any Milwaukee City park for the surrounding new immigrant\, south side neighborhood. Our grounds are open to the public everyday for jogging\, dog walking and bicycling. Tree pruning & removals will make the grounds safer for visitors and trees healthier. \n\n\n\nThere is a wide variety of work opportunities available including climbing and aerial lift applications (bucket and crawler lift access). There is a lot of pruning and removal work in the southern portion of the cemetery. \n\n\n\nOur work day will start at 8am. All volunteers bringing heavy equipment such as bucket trucks\, chip trucks\, and lifts\, please bring proper cones and signage to set up a safe work area.Lunch\, refreshments and warming areas will be provided by Forest Home Cemetery & Arboretum. Local media may be on site to help promote the efforts of our volunteers. Students from a number urban forestry programs will be in attendance\, this will be a great opportunity to mentor\, teach and advertise to the new generation of arborists. The Cemetery has partnerships with Teens Grow Greens and Sixteenth Street’s environmental apprentices. They are going to try and incorporate an opportunity for youth to learn from this experience. Please contact Adam Alves at alves.adam@countyofdane.com with any questions or to volunteer.  If you plan on attending\, please let him know how many people are attending and what kind of equipment you can volunteer for the day by September 15th so we can plan accordingly.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Appraising Tree Losses for Insurance Adjusters

This presentation shows case studies of collaboration between consulting arborists and insurance professionals\, focusing on claims from the Napa and Ventura fires\, the Santa Barbara mudslides\, and the Phoenix monsoonal windstorms.See what key data an adjuster needs from an arborist to process a claim.
