SUMMARY:FREE Urban Forestry Webinar: Trees and Storm Loading Events in the Upper Midwest: Predicting Damage\, Preventing It When Possible\, & Recovering Damaged Trees & Landscapes - A Prelude to the WAA Summer Conference
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will be an amended version of the full presentation at the WAA Summer Workshop to be held at the University of Wisconsin River Falls campus on July 26. \n\n\n\nUrban tree damage due to weather events in the upper Midwest are usually the result of wind loading events\, as well as snow and ice loading. If damage from these events is inevitable\, why don’t all trees suffer the same fate? This session will rank the loading events from incidental to catastrophic and predict which trees are more likely to suffer the most\, what can be done to prevent the preventable damage to trees\, and what steps can be taken to recover damaged trees (when they are worth it) as well as planting more resilient landscapes as part of the prevention and recovery steps. DESCRIPTION:One of the foundational concepts in tree appraisal is the Principal of Substitution. A thing cannot appraise for more than a substitute of equivalent utility. Possibly the hardest step in applying this principal is selecting a “functional equivalent” to the subject tree or trees. When selecting the best appraisal technique\, an appraiser must ask: “Is there a way the benefits provided by this tree could be replaced at a lower cost?” Depending on the facts of a case\, the answer could be very different. Whether your work with trees involves planting\, managing\, funding\, educating\, or beyond – i-Tree can help you better understand the benefits that trees provide\, the impacts of where those benefits are\, and how to apply that science to your project goals. \n\n\n\nWho: \n\n\n\nThis seminar-style offering will serve as both a refresher and an introduction to the newest tools and features\, with one-hour virtual sessions over a six-week period. There is no fee for the Academy\, and you can join all live sessions\, or select those that meet your schedule and interests. Register by filling out the participant form. \n\n\n\nWe will be offering continuing education credits (CEUs) for both the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and the New Jersey state Urban and Community Forestry program. It is a large\, flexible tool that offers much more than we can cover in a single hour.
