SUMMARY:Agroforestry: Apple Tree Grafting with Dan Bussey
DESCRIPTION:Apple Historian Dan Bussey is widely known for his expertise as the author of The Illustrated History of Apples In the US and Canada and his previous work as Orchard Manager for Seed Savers Exchange. Dan has been dedicated to the preservation and management of heirloom species\, and has brought many of them back from the brink of extinction. Although his work chronicles 16\,350 apple varietal listings\, he will be working with us to share the diversity of apples at the Riveredge Farm. Participants will learn how to graft 3 species of apples\, currently growing at our permaculture Farm\, onto M-2 semi-dwarf root stock. Registered participants get to take home 3 grafted apple trees in 7-gallon felt pots. \n\n\n\n\n\nTo register\, visit https://secure.riveredgenaturecenter.org/np/clients/riveredgenaturecenter/eventRegistration.jsp?forwardedFromSecureDomain=1&event=1671

SUMMARY:TREE Fund Webinars
DESCRIPTION:Biochar for Tree Growth and Water Quality: Exploring Potential in Urban and Disturbed Soils \n\n\n\nTuesday\, December 17\, 2024\, Noon (CST) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Rebecca Abney and Julia Campbell will be presenting their findings and research funded through Tree and Soil Research Fund Grant Program. CEUs will be available for this webinar. \n\n\n\nBiochar is a soil amendment that is broadly described to improve a number of soil deficiencies\, however it is not universally recommended. We present results from a handful of studies investigating methods and rates of application of biochar in urban soils. We will discuss how our study trees responded to different biochar applications and how each of these combinations impacted water quality. We will also discuss best practices for using biochar and which soils would benefit the most. We will also discuss best management practices for using biochar to improve urban stormwater quality. \n\n\n\nRegistration will be open approximately three weeks prior

DESCRIPTION:Identification features will be outlined to help you identify invasive trees that may be similar to some of our native forest trees here in the Midwest. Field identification is important to select species to control and species to retain in invasive plant management. Field ID characteristics will be provided to help you separate the native from the exotic invasive. \n\n\n\nLenny Farlee\, Purdue Extension Forester
