SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Woodland Owner Lunch and Learn - Seedling Genetics and Soil Fertility - Know What you are Planting and How to Care for It
DESCRIPTION:During each rotation of a planted forest\, landowners have a single opportunity to choose the appropriate genetics for their long-term investment. We encourage forest landowners to plant the best genetic quality seedlings possible. The benefits from establishing highly productive families\, in combination with good silvicultural practices\, will result in large financial returns. Nurseries grow loblolly pine seedlings that have a range in genetic quality. Information about the value of different seedling families can be sourced from seedling vendors as well as from tree improvement cooperatives. The cooperative provides a “third-party” assessment of the productivity\, disease resistance\, and stem quality of the many families that are available for purchase. An example of this is the loblolly pine Performance Rating System (PRS) developed by the NC State University Cooperative Tree Improvement Program. Information provided through this rating system helps seedling customers make informed decisions when comparing the genetic potential of one family relative to another. Once decisions on seedling genetics are made\, at-planting silvicultural decisions will determine the trajectory of the stand and if landowners will capture the potential of selected genetics. Appropriate chemical and/or mechanical site preparation\, fertilization\, timing\, and spacing & density all play critical roles in ensuring the success of a new plantation.

DESCRIPTION:Lara Roman\, USDA Forest ServiceNatalie van Doorn\, USDA Forest ServiceDana Dentice\, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society \n\n\n\nField monitoring of urban trees is essential to learn how urban forests change over time. Many arborists and urban forest managers worldwide seek to understand how their tree systems are faring in terms of growth\, health\, and mortality. The Urban Tree Growth & Longevity Working Group of the International Society of Arboriculture has developed standard protocols and effective strategies for long-term data collection. This new guidance\, which includes a Field Guide\, Resource Guide\, and companion training videos\, gives detailed instructions for how to record a small set of variables consistently over time that will support adaptive management. The intended users are any urban forestry professionals who intend to carry out field-based tree monitoring\, whether with arborists\, interns\, or citizen scientists. Dr. Lara Roman will lay out the key practices and components of the Field Guide.  Dr. Natalie van Doorn will go deeper into specific tips for successful implementation. And Dana Dentice will illustrate how these protocols have been put to work in training volunteers in Philadelphia to successfully monitor young tree health and survival. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

Miller is with CNUC as the Director of Research\, Development and Industry Intelligence. Miller holds a bachelor of science degree in horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree in urban forestry from the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point. He is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist and an ISA Certified Utility Specialist (IL-0225 BU). He has been Chair of the TREE Fund Board of Trustees\, President of the Utility Arborist Association\, twice Chair of the Edison Electric Institute Vegetation Management Task Force\, President of the Oregon Community Forest Council (now Oregon Community Trees)\, and editor of the ISA Rocky Mountain Chapter newsletter. He has served on the ISA Certification Test Committee and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Arboriculture and Urban Forestry. DESCRIPTION:Vivek Shandas\, Portland State UniversityCate Mingoya\, Groundwork\, USA \n\n\n\nMany are well aware of the inequitable distribution of trees in our urban areas.  Black\, indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC) communities often face the greatest burden of heat\, air pollution\, and flooding – all of which urban greening can help to mitigate. These inequitable patterns and the related persistent disparities in human health are an enduring legacy of various forms of housing segregation\, which were officially legal through the late 1960s.  In this presentation\, Dr. Vivek Shandas will provide a summary of one pernicious and federally sponsored urban planning policy officially begun in the 1930s — redlining — and the current day implications on the distribution of tree canopy\, extreme urban heat\, and the quality of life for those historically underserved communities. Cate Mingoya will discuss the Climate Safe Neighborhoods Partnership and how residents are working to intervene in municipal planning systems to ensure a more equitable distribution of climate mitigation resources.  \n\n\n\n1 CEU available with live broadcast.

Annually\, extreme heat already causes more deaths in the United States than all other weather-related causes combined\, with effects most pronounced in urban areas. Reducing urban heat exposure is an equity issue\, as low-income communities and communities of color are more likely to live in neighborhoods with older buildings\, low tree cover\, more heat-retaining surfaces\, and limited access to coping mechanisms such as air conditioning. In this webinar\, Edith de Guzman will introduce the efforts of the Los Angeles Urban Cooling Collaborative (LAUCC) — a multi-disciplinary\, national partnership of researchers and practitioners working to understand and implement urban cooling strategies in Los Angeles. Dr. David Eisenman will discuss heat-health impacts on the human body and how choices made in urban environments may prevent heat-related illness and death. Dr. Larry Kalkstein will present methods and findings of a recently-completed LAUCC modeling study revealing how various tree cover and solar reflectance “prescriptions” in L.A. could delay warming impacts and reduce heat-related mortality\, temperature\, humidity\, and oppressive air masses that lead to increased deaths\, and how this work could have relevance elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Free UAA Webinar: Does the "Right Tree\, Right Place" Principle Unintentionally Wrong the Public Right-of-Way?
DESCRIPTION:The “Right Tree\, Right Place” (RTRP) principle covers many site characteristics\, but is most closely associated with overhead wires\, where it prescribes small-statured trees to mitigate the costs and danger of utility line clearance. In recent years\, as many entities—both governmental and non-governmental—have adopted RTRP for planting palettes\, the proportion of small-statured trees being planted in densely wired zones has dramatically increased. These trees have much smaller canopies\, much shorter lifespans\, and are concentrated within a few taxa (e.g.\, Rosaceae)\, as compared to taxonomically diverse palettes of large-statured street trees. While urban foresters and arborists strive to increase urban tree canopy and its attendant benefits\, especially in low-UTC\, often low-income\, neighborhoods\, they find themselves bound by a design principle that focuses primarily on fitting species to site (rather than altering site characteristics). At the same time\, RTRP may still not adequately mitigate risk from the increasingly frequent disturbances that affect vegetation near utility lines. I would like to delve into our findings from a series of inter-related studies—findings that indicate the need for an independent\, comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of the various solutions to utility line conflicts. I would also like to hear in person from utility arborists\, whom I believe have a unique perspective on these issues. \n\n\n\nPresented by Yasha Magarik. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.
