SUMMARY:Free Urban Forest Connections Webinar: The Science and Practice of Managing Forests in Cities
DESCRIPTION:The past few months have highlighted the importance of parks and nature in cities. Urban natural areas are critical as refugia\, protecting biodiversity and mitigating the impacts of climate change all while contributing to the health and wellbeing of nearby residents. However\, natural areas are threatened by development as city populations grow\, and are susceptible to invasive plants and fragmentation all of which can lead to a decline in forest health and the benefits they can provide. In this webinar\, Sarah Charlop-Powers and Dr. Clara Pregitzer of the Natural Areas Conservancy will introduce the challenges and opportunities of managing forests in cities\, including 25 case studies from 12 cities across the U.S.\, and Forest Service research ecologist Dr. Rich Hallett will present a silvicultural framework for assessment and management of forests in cities\, adapted from rural forest management practice. Together\, the team will introduce viewers to a new collaborative network of cities and share successful strategies from across the nation. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: Fighting Microbes with Microbes to Protect our Native Trees
DESCRIPTION:Rachael Antwis\, PhD\, University of Salford \n\n\n\nAsh dieback is a fungal disease sweeping through Europe\, causing up to 95% loss of ash; one our most common tree species. In this seminar\, Dr. Rachael Antwis will provide an overview of the disease\, and how researchers are attempting to limit the loss of this important tree species. She will also discuss her recent research\, funded by the TREE Fund’s Jack Kimmel International Grant\, looking at how natural microbial communities in ash leaves may be important for regulating disease progression within the host. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is co-sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: The Calm Before: Tree Adjustments to Wind & Ice Storm Loads
DESCRIPTION:Kim D. Coder\, PhD\, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources\, University of Georgia \n\n\n\nTrees grow with\, and adjust to\, large lateral and vertical loads caused by wind and gravity. Storms with strong winds and ice can push trees beyond their ability to reconfigure or fall back to reduce drag. Exceeding tree structural ice and wind load limits cause branch\, root\, and crown failures\, or complete catastrophic loss of the tree. Wind loads greatly increase with small mile-per-hour velocity changes. Storm wind loads and ice storm issues\, and how they impact trees\, will be reviewed. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is co-sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and ISA Southern Chapter \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Urban Forest Connections Webinar: Addressing Tree Canopy Loss through Stronger Ordinances and other Policy Tools
DESCRIPTION:Karen Cappiella\, Center for Watershed ProtectionLydia Scott\, Chicago Region Trees Initiative \n\n\n\nAcross the country\, a number of cities are setting ambitious tree canopy goals to fight the trend of a decline in tree canopy. Among the many causes of canopy loss\, development is a key driver\, and is one that communities can significantly influence through local codes\, ordinances and other planning tools. In 2018\, the Center for Watershed Protection released the guide “Making your Community Forest-Friendly: A Worksheet for Review of Municipal Codes and Ordinances” to help communities better address these challenges. In this webinar\, Karen Cappiella of the Center for Watershed Protection will provide an overview of this tool and share a related research project that is being conducted in the Delaware River watershed. Lydia Scott of the Chicago Region Trees Initiative will share successful strategies and lessons learned from efforts to help strengthen tree preservation ordinances across the 284 municipalities in the Chicago region and also across the state of Illinois. \n\n\n\n1.25 CEU’s with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar from ISA Michigan: Getting the Most Out of Tree Injections
DESCRIPTION:The use of tree and trunk injections by tree service companies has increased rapidly in recent years.  A variety of compounds including nutrients\, insecticides\, and fungicides can be effectively applied via the tree’s vascular system.  Achieving rapid uptake and distribution of injected chemicals within trees\, however\, can sometimes be difficult.  Dr. Bert Cregg (Michigan State University\, Departments of Horticulture and Forestry) will discuss how soil\, tree\, and weather interact to control sap flow and will provide tips to ensure optimal uptake during injection applications. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Bert Cregg\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nDr. Bert Cregg is a Professor of Horticulture and Forestry at Michigan State University. He holds a doctorate in Forest Resources from the University of Georgia.  Dr. Cregg’s lab conducts research on the physiology and management of trees in landscape\, nursery and Christmas tree systems.  Prior to joining the faculty at MSU he was a research plant physiologist for the US Forest Service and International Paper.     \n\n\n\n1 CEU \n\n\n\nMust register beforehand to get the zoom link.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: Sidewalks\, Urban Plazas and Tree Roots
DESCRIPTION:Tree growth in urban areas is most limited by the lack of soil volume available for root development. This talk will discuss these limitations and share the results of research that compares different below grade treatments. The research studies are a ten-year comparison of four different treatments and a three-year comparison of six different treatment. The treatment can make a significant difference in root development and above ground tree characteristics as will be shown in photographs and with growth data. \n\n\n\nE. SUMMARY:Free Webinar from ISA Michigan: Tree Defect Walk
DESCRIPTION:Trees in the urban environment live a much tougher life than those living in the forest. Let’s take a walk through a public park and look at some defects that these urban trees are dealing with and what can be done to mitigate the risks associated with them. This walk with cover defects brought on by the environment\, humans and other pests. Instructor: Jake Carufel\, Canopy Climbers Tree Service \n\n\n\nJake Carufel has been a Certified Arborist since 2012 as well as a CTSP since 2010. His passion for trees started with tree climbing which progressed into becoming the Michigan Tree Climbing Champion in 2016. He runs a small tree preservation company based out of Lexington\, Michigan that loves working with big old trees! \n\n\n\n1 CEU \n\n\n\nYou must register in advance to get the zoom link.

This qualification promotes the safety of people and property by providing a standardized and systematic process for assessing tree risk. The results of a tree risk assessment can provide tree owners and risk managers with the information to make informed decisions to enhance tree benefits\, health\, and longevity. The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification Course is a two-day educational course followed by a 1/2 day assessment that includes both a written and field component. The course prepares the participant to take the TRAQ assessment to become ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. It is required that you attend the course and successfully complete the assessment in order to receive the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification. \n\n\n\n Hosted by: The Wisconsin Arborist Association Instructor: Mr. Don Roppolo Don Roppolo is the Manager of Arboricultural Training for Davey Tree. He has been working in the tree care industry for twenty-five years. During his career he has worked in the following capacities: taught arboriculture skills at universities and technical colleges\, municipal forestry\, arboricultural research\, and for the past sixteen years has worked in commercial arboriculture. He holds a bachelor of science in Agriculture with an emphasis in urban forestry from Western Illinois University\, and a master of science in Natural Resources with and emphasis in urban forestry from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. \n\n\n\nTENTATIVE AGENDA Day 1: Educational Session (8:00am – 5:00pm) Course Opening Module 1: Introduction to Tree Risk Assessment Break Module 2: Levels of Assessment Module 3: Target Assessment Lunch Module 4: Site Assessment Break Module 5: Tree Biology and Mechanics Day 2: Educational Session (8:00am – 5:00pm) Module 6: Tree Inspection and Assessment Break Module 7: Data Analysis and Risk Categorization (indoors) Module 7: Field Activity (outdoors) Lunch Module 8: Mitigation Module 9: Reporting Break Review and Exam Information Day 3: Exam (8:00am – 11:30am) Written exam Performance-based exam *Schedule subject to adjustment \n\n\n\nCOURSE CONTENT Tree Biology and Mechanics: Participants will learn how to assess wood structure\, decay\, and tree mechanics\, and evaluate their impact on likelihood of tree or tree part failure. Participants will also learn how to identify and assess defects and conditions that may affect likelihood of failure. Tree Inspection and Assessment: Participants will learn about types of targets\, assess the likelihood of a tree or tree part impacting a target\, and estimate the consequences of tree or tree part failure. Participants will also learn how to assess site factors that may influence likelihood of failure. Data Analysis and Risk Categorization: After learning the tree and target factors that must be assessed\, participants will combine likelihood of failure\, likelihood of impact\, and consequences of failure to derive a risk rating. This rating helps the assessor communicate tree risk to clients and risk managers\, and allows comparison of risk levels between trees. Risk Reporting: Participants will learn skills for clearly communicating tree risk to clients\, both in written and verbal reports. Participants will also learn about the key components that should be included in a report after completing a tree risk assessment. \n\n\n\nTREE RISK ASSESSMENT QUALIFICATION INFORMATION The Tree Risk Assessment Qualification is valid for five years from the date the TRAQ exam is passed. SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: A simple technique for online street tree inventories – is it right for my community?
DESCRIPTION:Street tree inventories are fundamentally important for municipal urban forest management\, but collecting and maintaining inventory data is expensive and time-consuming. So we asked the question\, “Can we generate high-quality data about street trees remotely using online street-level photos?” This presentation discusses the level of detail and data quality associated with virtual surveys conducted using Google Street View. Attendees will learn about some pros and cons of these virtual surveys\, and consider whether this simple online technique might be useful for generating street tree data in their own communities. \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Adam Berland is an Assistant Professor of Geography at Ball State University. He studies patterns and drivers of change in the geographic distribution of urban trees using field data and geospatial technologies. Recently he has been studying innovative ways of generating street tree data using free tools and simple techniques. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.
