SUMMARY:Free Utility Arborist Association Webinar: Do Utilities and Vegetation Management Contractors Really Need a Tree Risk Assessment Program?
DESCRIPTION:Vegetation can be a serious challenge for arborists and utilities\, causing service interruptions and even wildfires. Data-driven approaches based on reliable knowledge about the condition of vegetation support the transition from a cycle-based to condition and predictive-based maintenance\, increasing the process efficiency and safety. Satellite data and space technology made actionable via artificial intelligence allow to identify and prioritize critical segments of overhead lines affected by vegetation and improve tasking and reporting processes for arborists and utilities. Presented by Mike Neal. \n\n\n\nCEUs will be available with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Deciphering Plant Health and Vigor and their Effects on Pest Outbreaks
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever heard that a healthy plant is resistant to insects or that a stressed plant is more susceptible? Plant vigor and plant stress are commonly blamed for pest outbreaks but the research on this topic is not as clear cut. In this webinar\, Dr. David Held (Landscape Entomologist\, Auburn University) will explain the ideas of plant vigor and plant stress and how we expect plant feeding insects and mites respond to it. We will also explore how different groups of plant feeding insects (borers\, sap-suckers\, leaf chewers) respond to different states of plant health. This is a don’t miss webinar if you’ve ever used plant stress or vigor as a reason for a pest outbreak in woody plants. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: David Held\, PhD – Professor of Entomology\, Auburn University \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free Urban Forest Connections Webinar: Rx for Hot Cities: Urban Greening and Cooling to Reduce Heat-Related Mortality in Los Angeles and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Edith de Guzman\, TreePeople & Los Angeles Urban Cooling CollaborativeDavid Eisenman\, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine & UCLA Center for Public Health and DisastersLarry Kalkstein\, Applied Climatologists\, Inc. & Los Angeles Urban Cooling Collaborative \n\n\n\nExtreme heat and its health impacts are on the rise. Annually\, extreme heat already causes more deaths in the United States than all other weather-related causes combined\, with effects most pronounced in urban areas. Reducing urban heat exposure is an equity issue\, as low-income communities and communities of color are more likely to live in neighborhoods with older buildings\, low tree cover\, more heat-retaining surfaces\, and limited access to coping mechanisms such as air conditioning. In this webinar\, Edith de Guzman will introduce the efforts of the Los Angeles Urban Cooling Collaborative (LAUCC) — a multi-disciplinary\, national partnership of researchers and practitioners working to understand and implement urban cooling strategies in Los Angeles. Dr. David Eisenman will discuss heat-health impacts on the human body and how choices made in urban environments may prevent heat-related illness and death. Dr. Larry Kalkstein will present methods and findings of a recently-completed LAUCC modeling study revealing how various tree cover and solar reflectance “prescriptions” in L.A. could delay warming impacts and reduce heat-related mortality\, temperature\, humidity\, and oppressive air masses that lead to increased deaths\, and how this work could have relevance elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Free UAA Webinar: Does the "Right Tree\, Right Place" Principle Unintentionally Wrong the Public Right-of-Way?
DESCRIPTION:The “Right Tree\, Right Place” (RTRP) principle covers many site characteristics\, but is most closely associated with overhead wires\, where it prescribes small-statured trees to mitigate the costs and danger of utility line clearance. In recent years\, as many entities—both governmental and non-governmental—have adopted RTRP for planting palettes\, the proportion of small-statured trees being planted in densely wired zones has dramatically increased. These trees have much smaller canopies\, much shorter lifespans\, and are concentrated within a few taxa (e.g.\, Rosaceae)\, as compared to taxonomically diverse palettes of large-statured street trees. While urban foresters and arborists strive to increase urban tree canopy and its attendant benefits\, especially in low-UTC\, often low-income\, neighborhoods\, they find themselves bound by a design principle that focuses primarily on fitting species to site (rather than altering site characteristics). At the same time\, RTRP may still not adequately mitigate risk from the increasingly frequent disturbances that affect vegetation near utility lines. I would like to delve into our findings from a series of inter-related studies—findings that indicate the need for an independent\, comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of the various solutions to utility line conflicts. I would also like to hear in person from utility arborists\, whom I believe have a unique perspective on these issues. \n\n\n\nPresented by Yasha Magarik. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: Protecting Trees from Construction Impacts
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Benson\, PhD Update: Andrew Koeser\, PhD is the new speaker. \n\n\n\nWith increased intensification in cities throughout the world\, urban trees are often at risk of becoming damaged by construction impacts\, such as utility trenching or pavement / sidewalk repair. If the damage is severe and a tree loses a lot of its roots\, the consequences may result in tree failure\, or tree removal due to subsequent poor health. In this presentation\, we will look at some of the reasons why urban trees become damaged during construction and some of the more suitable methods available to prevent or limit that damage occurring. We’ll also look at some recent research which aims to improve what we know about the consequences of construction damage effects\, and hopefully provide some useful tools to practitioners who work with roots on a regular basis. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free Urban Forest Connections Webinar: The Science and Practice of Managing Forests in Cities
DESCRIPTION:The past few months have highlighted the importance of parks and nature in cities. Urban natural areas are critical as refugia\, protecting biodiversity and mitigating the impacts of climate change all while contributing to the health and wellbeing of nearby residents. However\, natural areas are threatened by development as city populations grow\, and are susceptible to invasive plants and fragmentation all of which can lead to a decline in forest health and the benefits they can provide. In this webinar\, Sarah Charlop-Powers and Dr. Clara Pregitzer of the Natural Areas Conservancy will introduce the challenges and opportunities of managing forests in cities\, including 25 case studies from 12 cities across the U.S.\, and Forest Service research ecologist Dr. Rich Hallett will present a silvicultural framework for assessment and management of forests in cities\, adapted from rural forest management practice. Together\, the team will introduce viewers to a new collaborative network of cities and share successful strategies from across the nation. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: Fighting Microbes with Microbes to Protect our Native Trees
DESCRIPTION:Rachael Antwis\, PhD\, University of Salford \n\n\n\nAsh dieback is a fungal disease sweeping through Europe\, causing up to 95% loss of ash; one our most common tree species. In this seminar\, Dr. Rachael Antwis will provide an overview of the disease\, and how researchers are attempting to limit the loss of this important tree species. She will also discuss her recent research\, funded by the TREE Fund’s Jack Kimmel International Grant\, looking at how natural microbial communities in ash leaves may be important for regulating disease progression within the host. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is co-sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: The Calm Before: Tree Adjustments to Wind & Ice Storm Loads
DESCRIPTION:Kim D. Coder\, PhD\, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources\, University of Georgia \n\n\n\nTrees grow with\, and adjust to\, large lateral and vertical loads caused by wind and gravity. Storms with strong winds and ice can push trees beyond their ability to reconfigure or fall back to reduce drag. Exceeding tree structural ice and wind load limits cause branch\, root\, and crown failures\, or complete catastrophic loss of the tree. Wind loads greatly increase with small mile-per-hour velocity changes. Storm wind loads and ice storm issues\, and how they impact trees\, will be reviewed. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is co-sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and ISA Southern Chapter \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.
