SUMMARY:Breeding for EAB-Resistance: What Does the Future Look like for Ash?
DESCRIPTION:EAB threatens the survival of ash trees in the U.S. where it is a common hardwood species especially in riparian and wetland forests. Ash was also used extensively for soil conservation (including wind breaks) and in urban green spaces and streets. Surviving\, or “lingering”\, ash trees that had maintained healthy canopies for at least two years after all other large ash trees had died were identified in natural forests long-infested by EAB. EAB egg bioassay experiments confirmed that these trees have an increased level of resistance due to defense responses\, including death of early instar larvae\, larvae with significantly lower weights\, or leaves less preferred for feeding by EAB adults. This webinar discusses research now being done to further understand this phenomenon and other findings to develop tree-improvement programs that could be successful in producing EAB resistant seed. Longer term goals include combining the best performing progeny from many families into a second generation seed orchard\, so that the seed produced may be used for restoration plantings.

SUMMARY:Forest Pest Damage from the Carbon Sequestration Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Both native and non-native forest insects and diseases across the contiguous United States are reducing the ability of the nation’s forests to capture and store carbon dioxide. This webinar will describe a study published in Fall 2021 in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change that calculated forests damaged by insects sequestered 69% less carbon than undamaged forests\, while those affected by disease sequestered 28% less carbon. The webinar will briefly cover the overarching findings of the study\, and then go into depth on what it means from the invasive forest pest perspective- including how to bring this issue to light when discussing prevention and management of forest pests\, and what improvements to current actions could further mitigate these sequestration losses.

SUMMARY:Growing Green: Apple Tree Grafting with Dan Bussey
DESCRIPTION:Apple Historian Dan Bussey is widely known for his expertise as the author of The Illustrated History of Apples In the US and Canada and his previous work as Orchard Manager for Seed Savers Exchange. Dan has been dedicated to the preservation and management of heirloom species\, and has brought many of them back from the brink of extinction. Although his work chronicles 16\,350 apple varietal listings\, he will be working with us to share the diversity of apples at the Riveredge Farm. Participants will learn how to graft 3 species of apples\, currently growing at our permaculture Farm\, onto M-2 semi-dwarf root stock. Registered participants get to take home and plant their 3 grafted apple trees. \n\n\n\nAges 16+

DESCRIPTION:VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! \n\n\n\nUPDATED DATES!!! \n\n\n\nThe last two years have been kinda crazy\, that’s why we are hosting the 2021 Day of Service in 2022 at Hawthorne Hollow Arboretum. The site address is 880 Green Bay Rd\, Kenosha\, WI 53144. The event is scheduled for Friday\, March 25th with an inclement weather day planned for the following Friday\, April 1st.  \n\n\n\nHawthorne Hollow’s mission …”is to cultivate appreciation\, understanding\, and stewardship of our natural and local heritage through environmental education and sanctuary preservation” and they could use our help. \n\n\n\nThere is a wide variety of work opportunities available\, climbing\, aerial lift applications (bucket and crawler lift access) the majority of the work is pruning orientated with a number of removals there are even a few cabling opportunities for those that are interested. \n\n\n\nOur work day will start at 8am. All volunteers bringing heavy equipment such as bucket trucks\, chip trucks\, and lifts\, please bring proper cones and signage to set up a safe work area.Lunch\, refreshments and warming areas will be provided by Hawthorne Hallow. Local media will be on site to help promote the efforts of our volunteers. Students from a number urban forestry programs will be in attendance\, this will be a great opportunity to mentor\, teach and advertise to the new generation of arborists.Please contact Adam Alves at adam-alves@hotmail.com with any questions or to volunteer.  If you plan on attending Please let him know how many people are attending and what kind of equipment you can volunteer for the day by January 21st so we can plan accordingly.

SUMMARY:The worst kind of snowbird: the invasive of Asian longhorned beetle in South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:The Asian longhorned beetle\, Anoplophora glabripennis (ALB)\, was found in South Carolina in May 2020\, which now represents the southernmost infestation in North America. Eradication efforts are underway\, but several challenges persist due to the novel climate and environment in which ALB has established. This talk will provide a refresher on ALB biology and identification\, as well as established and potential eradication methods being used in South Carolina. We will discuss how ALB likely arrived in the Deep South\, and also why the threat of more ALB movement and new infestations is unlikely to cease.

Undisturbed\, healthy soils are uncommon in this environment. Overcoming the difficulties of growing healthy trees in compacted\, urban soils is a challenge without appropriate site preparation. This talk will aim at providing science-based recommendations to ensure healthy urban trees persist. \n\n\n\nThe Ins and Outs of Online Tree Selector Tools – Allyson Salisbury \n\n\n\nOnline tree and plant selectors can be a valuable tool for identifying the right trees for a planting site\, but with so many options it can be hard to know where to start. In this class\, you’ll learn about different tree selector tools available online and how to use them. \n\n\n\nThe Multiple Dimensions of Tree Defense to Insects – Chad Rigsby \n\n\n\nThis presentation will provide a broad overview of woody plant-herbivorous insect interactions. We will discuss antibiosis- and antixenosis-type plant defenses\, the difference between tolerance and resistance and why each is important\, the role of abiotic stress in these interactions\, insect counter-adaptations to the defenses of their host plants\, and the role of insecticides in managing woody plants. \n\n\n\nAs the Climate Warms\, Trees Feel the Heat – Beth Brantley \n\n\n\nChanging climate\, warmer temperatures\, longer growing seasons\, extreme weather\, increases in precipitation… what does this mean for our trees? We will explore current conditions\, pests and pathogens\, tree responses and discuss opportunities for new tree species on our landscapes. \n\n\n\nStorm Preparedness – Scott Altenhoff \n\n\n\nThis 1-hour presentation will explore how arborists and UF professionals can take proactive measures to protect the trees under their care from the ravages of extreme weather events and to expedite post-storm recovery efforts. Practical tips and BMPs for both commercial and municipal arborists will be discussed as we explore a variety of case studies from Eugene\, OR. Attendees will leave the session with an enhanced understanding of what is required to increase storm resilience at both the individual tree and community levels. \n\n\n\nAlternatives to Invasive Plants – Laura Jull \n\n\n\nWhat can we do about invasive plants? It seems each day\, a new plant is put on invasive plant lists. Wisconsin’s DNR has regulated some of these plants and has placed them on the NR-40 list of invasive species. We will briefly discuss the WI-DNR NR-40 list of invasive woody species and alternative native and non-native species to choose from that have the same\, desirable qualities in the landscape\, but without the invasiveness. \n\n\n\nTrending Tree Insect Issues – Michael Hillstrom \n\n\n\n2021 brought us a resurgence of gypsy moths\, continued expansion of ash dieback and mortality from emerald ash borer\, more white oak mortality and lots of media about ticks\, cicadas and spotted lanternfly. We’ll dissect these topics and highlight the best management options. \n\n\n\nCommunity Trees: Risk or Reward – Lee Mueller \n\n\n\nTrees are often ignored and expected to care for themselves. However\, research has established that regular care helps trees live longer\, provides more benefits\, and costs less to maintain. Join us for a discussion of tree costs and benefits\, maintenance scenarios\, and maximizing the net benefits provided by community trees. \n\n\n\nManaging Urban Areas for Wildlife – Jamie Nack \n\n\n\nProtecting and restoring wildlife habitat in our cities and suburbs is a vital component of wildlife conservation. Well-planned urban habitat can provide critical connectivity within the landscape for wildlife and important “stopover” sites for migratory birds. In return\, urban wildlife provides important connections to nature for urbanites and improves human health and well-being. This presentation will focus on ways to provide habitat for urban wildlife as well as resources and tips for living with wildlife. \n\n\n\nIntroductory Track\n\n\n\nTree Planting and Establishment/Post Planting Care – Adam Alves\, Zac Eckberg \n\n\n\nAdam and Zac will discuss the BMP and real-world implications for putting trees in holes\, and what care is needed to ensure success for the trees we plant. \n\n\n\nForestry Partnerships with Evolving GIS Tools – Tim Bull/Andrew Bartell \n\n\n\nMunicipal forestry is enhanced when we embrace evolving technologies. Web-based GIS tools are designed for immediate access to tree inventories and are critical to planning out daily\, monthly\, and annual forestry operations. Consultants and software designers have made multiple GIS options available in the urban forestry arena. These solutions are designed to be easy to access and headache-free. They can also be expensive. \n\n\n\nWhat about municipalities that want to tackle this challenge on their own? There is something to be said for the satisfaction of confronting something new that we are not accustomed to\, and succeeding. In this presentation\, staff members from the City of Sheboygan will discuss how they approached building a forestry tool within the existing City GIS to meet their management needs. Multiple professionals from different City operations came together to build this tool from scratch. This discussion explores the differences between canopy assessments\, management plans\, ordinances\, and master plans to help advance urban forestry and local goals. \n\n\n\nMore Than a Municipal Object: Tree Advocates Talk for Trees – Jeanne Mueller\, Kevin Westphal\, Olivia Witthun \n\n\n\nFunded by a grant from the Wisconsin DNR\, Cedarburg Green launched a multi-faceted campaign focused on advocating for the city’s urban trees. Join us on a journey through 2020 (and 2021) to learn how a very small group of advocates educated decision makers\, residents\, and children\, AND achieved its goal of a 2021 city budget which included $30K for tree planting\, $50K for site prep\, and more funding for forestry operations. \n\n\n\nWisconsin’s Champion Trees Program – Chris Tall \n\n\n\nThe Champion Tree program recognizes and celebrates the state’s largest trees. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources began documenting these trees in 1941\, inspired by a national program managed by American Forests. SUMMARY:Firewood Rules\, Certifications\, and Recommendations across the USA
DESCRIPTION:The federal deregulation of emerald ash borer in January 2021 was widely expected to lead to many changes in the regulatory environment around firewood in the USA. This webinar will highlight the release of a new report written by staff of The Nature Conservancy’s Don’t Move Firewood campaign\, covering what regulations and recommendations are in place a year after the EAB deregulation was finalized. We will describe how the current regulatory environments applying to the inter- and intra-state movement of firewood vary greatly in type and prevalence across the United States. The dynamic situation of many forest pests\, coupled with the different challenges faced by the state agencies’ statutory authorities and priorities\, forest conditions\, and unique geographies\, have all combined to create a complex regulatory mosaic- and as a result\, a very challenging outreach environment.

SUMMARY:The biology and management of the invasive spotted lanternfly\, Lycorma delicatula
DESCRIPTION:The biology of the invasive spotted lanternfly poses a uniquely challenging threat to many agricultural crops\, ornamentals\, and\, to a lesser extent\, forests. Spotted lanternflies are highly polyphagous\, can inhabit a wide climatic range\, and thus have the potential to become established in many regions of the United States. Additionally\, SLF females often lay their eggs on personal vehicles\, commercial trucks\, train cars\, and many other items\, all of which increase the probability that SLF may be accidentally moved into new habitat ranges. Successful management incorporate an integrative approach including: a community education & reporting system\, selected insecticide applications by state and federal agencies\, and education\, training\, and permitting of commercial and business operations moving in and out of quarantine zones. The complex biology of this adaptable insect pest requires a multi-disciplinary approach and there is much still to learn about SLF biology.

We have another fabulous line-up this year you won’t want to miss! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual Option \n\n\n\nThe 2022 WAA/WIDNR VIRTUAL Annual Conference will be available for viewing on the Pheedloop Platform March 1-31\, 2022. This will be a professionally recorded conference and will offer an improved experience over last year’s virtual offering. This is a repeat performance of our In-Person Conference from February 20-22\, 2022. \n\n\n\nWatch the sessions at your own pace! The platform will be available for a full four weeks.  This seminar will include around 30 hours of virtual learning and engagement with approximately 30 CEUs available through online quizzes. You must pass the quiz with an 80% (16 of 20 correct for a one-hour session) to attain CEUs. Results will be given upon completion of each quiz\, as the quiz may be taken as often as necessary to pass. WAA will submit the passing results to ISA for you to receive your CEUs. \n\n\n\nEach person must provide their own email address and Certification number (even if one person is registering multiple people) if they want CEUs.  Participants will receive an email invite to the Pheedloop Platform the day before the event starts. SUMMARY:Long-term Impacts and Management of Emerald Ash Borer
DESCRIPTION:The emerald ash borer\, an invasive insect\, has spread from its initial introduction in Michigan and killed millions of ash trees across the region. All six ash species native to its introduced range are susceptible to this pest\, and the effects of EAB differ in the different kinds of ecosystems inhabited by these different ash species. Our long-term monitoring program has provided insights into the impacts of EAB on forests and on the long-term dynamics of ash species. Looking to the future\, integrated pest management strategies can be used in situation-specific combinations to reduce and mitigate effects of EAB.
