SUMMARY:Firewood Rules\, Certifications\, and Recommendations across the USA
DESCRIPTION:The federal deregulation of emerald ash borer in January 2021 was widely expected to lead to many changes in the regulatory environment around firewood in the USA. This webinar will highlight the release of a new report written by staff of The Nature Conservancy’s Don’t Move Firewood campaign\, covering what regulations and recommendations are in place a year after the EAB deregulation was finalized. We will describe how the current regulatory environments applying to the inter- and intra-state movement of firewood vary greatly in type and prevalence across the United States. The dynamic situation of many forest pests\, coupled with the different challenges faced by the state agencies’ statutory authorities and priorities\, forest conditions\, and unique geographies\, have all combined to create a complex regulatory mosaic- and as a result\, a very challenging outreach environment.

SUMMARY:The biology and management of the invasive spotted lanternfly\, Lycorma delicatula
DESCRIPTION:The biology of the invasive spotted lanternfly poses a uniquely challenging threat to many agricultural crops\, ornamentals\, and\, to a lesser extent\, forests. Spotted lanternflies are highly polyphagous\, can inhabit a wide climatic range\, and thus have the potential to become established in many regions of the United States. Additionally\, SLF females often lay their eggs on personal vehicles\, commercial trucks\, train cars\, and many other items\, all of which increase the probability that SLF may be accidentally moved into new habitat ranges. Successful management incorporate an integrative approach including: a community education & reporting system\, selected insecticide applications by state and federal agencies\, and education\, training\, and permitting of commercial and business operations moving in and out of quarantine zones. The complex biology of this adaptable insect pest requires a multi-disciplinary approach and there is much still to learn about SLF biology.

SUMMARY:Long-term Impacts and Management of Emerald Ash Borer
DESCRIPTION:The emerald ash borer\, an invasive insect\, has spread from its initial introduction in Michigan and killed millions of ash trees across the region. All six ash species native to its introduced range are susceptible to this pest\, and the effects of EAB differ in the different kinds of ecosystems inhabited by these different ash species. Our long-term monitoring program has provided insights into the impacts of EAB on forests and on the long-term dynamics of ash species. Looking to the future\, integrated pest management strategies can be used in situation-specific combinations to reduce and mitigate effects of EAB.

We are introducing a web development software for facilitating tree species selection for urban projects. We consider a multicriteria decision involving infrastructure conditions\, site conditions\, aesthetics and climate. We also consider not only present climate appropriateness but also future climate pertinence. The variables involved in the software were validated by multiple stakeholders including private and public actors working with urban vegetation. We expect this tool to improve the performance of trees in urban areas given that it can also inform not expert of better urban trees decision making.  \n\n\n\nTime Length of Presentation: 30 minutes \n\n\n\nPresenter Name: Dra. SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Thousand Cankers Disease (TCD)
DESCRIPTION:Thousand cankers disease is caused by the fungus Geosmithia morbida\, and this pathogen is transmitted by the walnut twig beetle\, Pityophthorus juglandis.  This disease impacts black walnut and\, until 2010\, was only found west of the Mississippi River.  The disease gets its name from the many tiny black cankers caused by the fungus growing in the phloem.  This fungus is brought in by walnut twig beetles\, which bore into the tree and create galleries.  In addition to the cankers and tiny beetle entrance holes\, infected trees also exhibit yellow foliage\, wilting\, and eventual branch mortality.  One beetle and canker will not kill the tree\, but mass attacks by beetles can result in thousands of little cankers that eventually coalesce and girdle the tree.  There are no known control or management options for thousand cankers disease.  Care should be taken to prevent the spread of the disease by buying local firewood\, or wood from which you know the source\, and watching for symptoms in existing trees. In this webinar\, Dr. Matthew Ginzel (Purdue) will provide an update on TCD distribution\, impacts\, and preventative management strategies. \n\n\n\nNo advanced registration required.

SUMMARY:Free Urban Forest Connections Webinar: Urban Trees and Stormwater Management: Quantifying Impacts\, Maximizing Benefits
DESCRIPTION:Stormwater managers and urban foresters share a growing recognition that urban trees play an important role in controlling urban stormwater runoff.  In this webinar\, Dr. Trisha Moore (Kansas State University)and Eric Kuehler (Nashville Metro Water Services) aim to address some very practical questions related to the role of trees in stormwater management\, including: How can we quantity potential runoff reductions by trees in urban environments? What effect do trees have on runoff quality? How can urban forests be managed to maximize stormwater benefits? Trisha will share tools for quantifying the runoff quantity and quality of urban trees developed in collaboration with the Water Research Foundation. Then\, Eric will discuss some useful rules of thumb for urban trees and stormwater mitigation found in the Forest Service publication “Urban Forest Systems and Green Stormwater Infrastructure.“ He will demonstrate how these measures are being used by Nashville Metro Water Services to help quantify stormwater benefits.
