SUMMARY:Free UAA Webinar: Does the "Right Tree\, Right Place" Principle Unintentionally Wrong the Public Right-of-Way?
DESCRIPTION:The “Right Tree\, Right Place” (RTRP) principle covers many site characteristics\, but is most closely associated with overhead wires\, where it prescribes small-statured trees to mitigate the costs and danger of utility line clearance. In recent years\, as many entities—both governmental and non-governmental—have adopted RTRP for planting palettes\, the proportion of small-statured trees being planted in densely wired zones has dramatically increased. These trees have much smaller canopies\, much shorter lifespans\, and are concentrated within a few taxa (e.g.\, Rosaceae)\, as compared to taxonomically diverse palettes of large-statured street trees. While urban foresters and arborists strive to increase urban tree canopy and its attendant benefits\, especially in low-UTC\, often low-income\, neighborhoods\, they find themselves bound by a design principle that focuses primarily on fitting species to site (rather than altering site characteristics). At the same time\, RTRP may still not adequately mitigate risk from the increasingly frequent disturbances that affect vegetation near utility lines. I would like to delve into our findings from a series of inter-related studies—findings that indicate the need for an independent\, comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of the various solutions to utility line conflicts. I would also like to hear in person from utility arborists\, whom I believe have a unique perspective on these issues. \n\n\n\nPresented by Yasha Magarik. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: Protecting Trees from Construction Impacts
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Benson\, PhD Update: Andrew Koeser\, PhD is the new speaker. \n\n\n\nWith increased intensification in cities throughout the world\, urban trees are often at risk of becoming damaged by construction impacts\, such as utility trenching or pavement / sidewalk repair. If the damage is severe and a tree loses a lot of its roots\, the consequences may result in tree failure\, or tree removal due to subsequent poor health. In this presentation\, we will look at some of the reasons why urban trees become damaged during construction and some of the more suitable methods available to prevent or limit that damage occurring. We’ll also look at some recent research which aims to improve what we know about the consequences of construction damage effects\, and hopefully provide some useful tools to practitioners who work with roots on a regular basis. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free Urban Forest Connections Webinar: The Science and Practice of Managing Forests in Cities
DESCRIPTION:The past few months have highlighted the importance of parks and nature in cities. Urban natural areas are critical as refugia\, protecting biodiversity and mitigating the impacts of climate change all while contributing to the health and wellbeing of nearby residents. However\, natural areas are threatened by development as city populations grow\, and are susceptible to invasive plants and fragmentation all of which can lead to a decline in forest health and the benefits they can provide. In this webinar\, Sarah Charlop-Powers and Dr. Clara Pregitzer of the Natural Areas Conservancy will introduce the challenges and opportunities of managing forests in cities\, including 25 case studies from 12 cities across the U.S.\, and Forest Service research ecologist Dr. Rich Hallett will present a silvicultural framework for assessment and management of forests in cities\, adapted from rural forest management practice. Together\, the team will introduce viewers to a new collaborative network of cities and share successful strategies from across the nation. \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: The Calm Before: Tree Adjustments to Wind & Ice Storm Loads
DESCRIPTION:Kim D. Coder\, PhD\, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources\, University of Georgia \n\n\n\nTrees grow with\, and adjust to\, large lateral and vertical loads caused by wind and gravity. Storms with strong winds and ice can push trees beyond their ability to reconfigure or fall back to reduce drag. Exceeding tree structural ice and wind load limits cause branch\, root\, and crown failures\, or complete catastrophic loss of the tree. Wind loads greatly increase with small mile-per-hour velocity changes. Storm wind loads and ice storm issues\, and how they impact trees\, will be reviewed. \n\n\n\nThis webinar is co-sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and ISA Southern Chapter \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.

SUMMARY:Urban Forest Connections Webinar: Addressing Tree Canopy Loss through Stronger Ordinances and other Policy Tools
DESCRIPTION:Karen Cappiella\, Center for Watershed ProtectionLydia Scott\, Chicago Region Trees Initiative \n\n\n\nAcross the country\, a number of cities are setting ambitious tree canopy goals to fight the trend of a decline in tree canopy. Among the many causes of canopy loss\, development is a key driver\, and is one that communities can significantly influence through local codes\, ordinances and other planning tools. In 2018\, the Center for Watershed Protection released the guide “Making your Community Forest-Friendly: A Worksheet for Review of Municipal Codes and Ordinances” to help communities better address these challenges. In this webinar\, Karen Cappiella of the Center for Watershed Protection will provide an overview of this tool and share a related research project that is being conducted in the Delaware River watershed. Lydia Scott of the Chicago Region Trees Initiative will share successful strategies and lessons learned from efforts to help strengthen tree preservation ordinances across the 284 municipalities in the Chicago region and also across the state of Illinois. \n\n\n\n1.25 CEU’s with live broadcast.

DESCRIPTION:The use of tree and trunk injections by tree service companies has increased rapidly in recent years.  A variety of compounds including nutrients\, insecticides\, and fungicides can be effectively applied via the tree’s vascular system.  Achieving rapid uptake and distribution of injected chemicals within trees\, however\, can sometimes be difficult.  Dr. Bert Cregg (Michigan State University\, Departments of Horticulture and Forestry) will discuss how soil\, tree\, and weather interact to control sap flow and will provide tips to ensure optimal uptake during injection applications. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Bert Cregg\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\nDr. Bert Cregg is a Professor of Horticulture and Forestry at Michigan State University. He holds a doctorate in Forest Resources from the University of Georgia.  Dr. Cregg’s lab conducts research on the physiology and management of trees in landscape\, nursery and Christmas tree systems.  Prior to joining the faculty at MSU he was a research plant physiologist for the US Forest Service and International Paper.     \n\n\n\n1 CEU \n\n\n\nMust register beforehand to get the zoom link.

SUMMARY:Free TREE Fund Webinar: Sidewalks\, Urban Plazas and Tree Roots
DESCRIPTION:Tree growth in urban areas is most limited by the lack of soil volume available for root development. This talk will discuss these limitations and share the results of research that compares different below grade treatments. The research studies are a ten-year comparison of four different treatments and a three-year comparison of six different treatment. The treatment can make a significant difference in root development and above ground tree characteristics as will be shown in photographs and with growth data. \n\n\n\nE. Thomas Smiley\, PhD\, Bartlett Tree Research Lab \n\n\n\nThis webinar is co-sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and ISA Southern Chapter \n\n\n\n1 CEU with live broadcast.
