SUMMARY:TREE Fund Webinar: Loading of a Tie-in Point While Climbing
DESCRIPTION:Loading of a Tie-in Point While Climbing \n\n\n\nTuesday\, February 9\, 2021\, at 12 p.m. Central \n\n\n\nBrian Kane\, PhD\, University of Massachusetts Amherst \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCLICK HERE To Register\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nChoosing an appropriate tie-in point (TIP) is a key to efficiently and safely work in a tree. A TIP that’s high and central in the crown provides maximum mobility for a climber\, but the TIP also has to be strong enough to bear the loads associated with climbing. Until recently\, very few measurements of such loads were taken. Starting with the ITCC in 2017\, Dr. Kane has measured loads at the TIP for a variety of situations including ascents\, descents\, limb walks and swings\, and falls. This presentation will present the findings from those studies. \n\n\n\nISA and SAF continuing education credits are available for watching the entire live webinar. CEU details: \n\n\n\nSAF CEU Cat 2: 1.00 \n\n\n\nISA CEU Category: Practice: 1\, Climber Specialist: 1\, Certified Arborist: 1\, Municipal Specialist: 1\, Aerial Lift: 1 \n\n\n\nThis webinar is co-sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System

SUMMARY:ISA Virtual Annual Conference & Trade Show
DESCRIPTION:ISA has made the difficult decision to cancel our in-person 2020 ISA Annual International Conference and Trade Show slated for 15-17 December 2020. The safety and well-being of our attendees\, members\, employees\, partners and vendors remains our top priority. This decision was made due to recent developments in COVID-19 cases\, the restrictions placed by public health officials on large gatherings through 2020 in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, and the overall climate surrounding travel and meetings. We want to take this time to thank the ISA Rocky Mountain Chapter for their leadership throughout the entire planning process. The members of the Conference Planning Committee were prepared to host an exceptional conference and we cannot thank them enough for their insights and efforts. While we are disappointed we will not be able to meet in person this year\, we are excited to announce that ISA is working towards a virtual experience where attendees will have the opportunity to earn continuing education units\, listen to Keynote Speakers\, engage with presentations and presenters\, and network with their peers from the comfort of their homes. ISA plans on making this event accessible on a global scale reflecting our international community\, and we look forward to sharing more information in the coming weeks on how to participate in this virtual experience. ISA thanks all of its members\, attendees\, and partners for their continued support and enthusiasm for this event\, and we look forward to meeting virtually this year\, and in-person as soon as we are able to do so safely. \n\n\n\nMore information can be found on the ISA website.

SUMMARY:SAWW - Chainsaw Safety Level 1 (Women-only)
DESCRIPTION:Learn to operate a chainsaw safely and efficiently in this certified Safety and Woods Working (SAWW) training course.  \n\n\n\nWe offer this class to women only\, in an effort to create an atmosphere of learning that recognizes saw operation techniques and learning tools that match participants’ needs. All SAWW Level 1 concepts will be covered. Women are encouraged to register for either class. \n\n\n\nThis course is certified through the Safety and Woods Working (SAWW) training program and is part of a four-level series designed to increase safety and efficiency of chainsaw use. Participants in Level 1 training will spend part of the morning in the outdoor classroom\, and at least 5 hours outside practicing techniques to operate chainsaws safely\, comfortably and productively. Topics covered include personal protective equipment (PPE)\, body mechanics\, chainsaw safety features\, the chain and the cutter tooth\, reactive forces\, planning and executing tree felling\, intro to limbing\, and bucking. Level I introduces the participant to bore cutting and open face felling\, and develops the mechanics to execute these techniques. Hands-on training gives participants the opportunity to fell at least one tree. \n\n\n\nWorkshop leader: Luke Saunders (Forester with Adaptive Restoration LLC).

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Woodland Owner Lunch and Learn - Seedling Genetics and Soil Fertility - Know What you are Planting and How to Care for It
DESCRIPTION:During each rotation of a planted forest\, landowners have a single opportunity to choose the appropriate genetics for their long-term investment. We encourage forest landowners to plant the best genetic quality seedlings possible. The benefits from establishing highly productive families\, in combination with good silvicultural practices\, will result in large financial returns. Nurseries grow loblolly pine seedlings that have a range in genetic quality. Information about the value of different seedling families can be sourced from seedling vendors as well as from tree improvement cooperatives. The cooperative provides a “third-party” assessment of the productivity\, disease resistance\, and stem quality of the many families that are available for purchase. An example of this is the loblolly pine Performance Rating System (PRS) developed by the NC State University Cooperative Tree Improvement Program. Information provided through this rating system helps seedling customers make informed decisions when comparing the genetic potential of one family relative to another. Once decisions on seedling genetics are made\, at-planting silvicultural decisions will determine the trajectory of the stand and if landowners will capture the potential of selected genetics. Appropriate chemical and/or mechanical site preparation\, fertilization\, timing\, and spacing & density all play critical roles in ensuring the success of a new plantation.

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: The Importance of Utility Line Clearance
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Utility line clearance (pruning) is often misunderstood and leads to frustration and conflict between utility arborists and homeowners. Education is needed to help homeowners and managers differentiate good from bad utility pruning. This presentation will cover the following topics: Why utilities prune\, describe vegetation clearance approaches\, history of utility pruning\, problems of utility pruning and clarify solutions for utility pruning problems. \n\n\n\nBio: Randall H. Miller is with CNUC as the Director of Research\, Development and Industry Intelligence. Miller holds a bachelor of science degree in horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree in urban forestry from the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point. He is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist and an ISA Certified Utility Specialist (IL-0225 BU). SUMMARY:Free Urban Forest Connections Webinar - Redlining’s Intensifying Harm: Rising Temperatures\, Hotter Neighborhoods\, and How Trees Can Help
DESCRIPTION:Vivek Shandas\, Portland State UniversityCate Mingoya\, Groundwork\, USA \n\n\n\nMany are well aware of the inequitable distribution of trees in our urban areas.  Black\, indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC) communities often face the greatest burden of heat\, air pollution\, and flooding – all of which urban greening can help to mitigate. These inequitable patterns and the related persistent disparities in human health are an enduring legacy of various forms of housing segregation\, which were officially legal through the late 1960s.  In this presentation\, Dr. Vivek Shandas will provide a summary of one pernicious and federally sponsored urban planning policy officially begun in the 1930s — redlining — and the current day implications on the distribution of tree canopy\, extreme urban heat\, and the quality of life for those historically underserved communities. Cate Mingoya will discuss the Climate Safe Neighborhoods Partnership and how residents are working to intervene in municipal planning systems to ensure a more equitable distribution of climate mitigation resources.  \n\n\n\n1 CEU available with live broadcast.
