DESCRIPTION:SAWW Training is an umbrella organization that promotes safe and efficient chainsaw use\, both professionally and recreationally\, and oversees the development of training curriculums and the training of trainers.  SAWW Certified Trainers are experts in their field.  They are required to have extensive sawing experience\, to participate in a rigorous certification process\, and to refresh their skills in an annual training course.  Certified Trainers stay current in regulation changes\, and in safety and utilization techniques. \n\n\n\nLevel 1Overview of the SAWW Training Program.  OSHA regulations and requirements.  Sessions on body mechanics\, personal protective equipment\, necessary tools\, saws\, tree felling\, and limbing\, bucking\, and topping. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\n\n\nChaps and helmet (students may borrow instructors at no charge)Proper footwear (ie steel-toe work boots)Pack a lunchIf you have a chainsaw bring it\, the instructor will lend you one if you do not own one

SUMMARY:Growing Green: Apple Tree Grafting with Dan Bussey
DESCRIPTION:Apple Historian Dan Bussey is widely known for his expertise as the author of The Illustrated History of Apples In the US and Canada and his previous work as Orchard Manager for Seed Savers Exchange. Dan has been dedicated to the preservation and management of heirloom species\, and has brought many of them back from the brink of extinction. Although his work chronicles 16\,350 apple varietal listings\, he will be working with us to share the diversity of apples at the Riveredge Farm. Participants will learn how to graft 3 species of apples\, currently growing at our permaculture Farm\, onto M-2 semi-dwarf root stock. Registered participants get to take home and plant their 3 grafted apple trees. \n\n\n\nAges 16+

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Cassandra Johnson\, Research Social Scientist with the USDA Forest Service\, will present research findings on the tension between distressed social conditions and environmental preservation in Atlanta’s South River watershed. Allen Doyle with the South River Forest Coalition will outline recent efforts the coalition has made to establish the “South River Forest\,’ which could include 3\,500 acres of both green and developed spaces.
