Tree Climbing Competition

The WAA Tree Climbing Competition will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Pierce Park in Appleton, WI. Registered competitors are to report early in the morning for instructions and gear checks, with the 5 preliminary events beginning by 8:30 a.m. A Masters' Challenge will determine the men’s division champion following the preliminary events mid-afternoon. Prizes and awards will follow the Masters' Challenge. (The WAA Summer Workshop will be held separately on Thursday, July 10th). We will be following the current ITCC rules.  

Check this site in late June for the Tree Climbing Competition application. Completed Applications will be due Monday, July 21, 2008. Applications must be completed in full and mailed, along with payment, to the Chairman, and post marked by the due date.

Since we anticipate more competitors than we can accommodate (30), a fair selection process will be implemented. On-time registrants, current WAA members, top performing competitors from 2007, and women competitors will have priority registration. A lottery system will choose the remaining competitors, with considerations made to diversifying the tree care organizations represented. We expect that each men’s division competitor will have reasonable skills in each event. We are asking that organizations select and send their best competitors: 1 to 3 men’s division climbers per organization. However, we understand that some organizations have more than 3 top-caliber climbers. 

Women competitors are strongly encouraged to compete! Our goal is to have 5 women competitors this year. Our goal is to include as many climbers as possible while respecting the workload of the 35 judges, scorekeepers, and volunteers needed to hold this event.

Being a Saturday, we are planning on having a larger public presence. We encourage WAA members, family, friends, neighbors, and the general public to come out and cheer on the climbers!

The 2007 WAA Tree Climbing Competition was held on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Warner Park in Madison, WI. The winners; Joe House (Men's Division), and Tammy Spitzer (Women's Division) will represent our chapter at the 2008 Annual ISA Conference & Trade Show in St. Louis, Missouri, July 26-30.
